A tribute to local legend: Tommy Gemmell

In the heart of Craigneuk stands a proud tribute to one of Scottish football’s most celebrated players, Tommy Gemmell. The statue honours the life and achievements of the Craigneuk-born defender who rose from a small working-class community to become a legend with Celtic F.C. and a hero of Scottish football.

From Craigneuk to European Glory

Gemmell is best remembered as a key member of the famous Lisbon Lions. In the historic 1967 European Cup Final, he scored the vital equalising goal that helped Celtic defeat Inter Milan and become the first British club to win the European Cup. It was a moment that secured Gemmell’s place in football history.

He also scored in the 1970 European Cup Final against Feyenoord, making him one of the rare players to score in two European Cup finals. During his career with Celtic, Gemmell made hundreds of appearances and won numerous trophies, becoming one of the club’s most respected defenders.

A Man of Steel

While his football achievements are remarkable, the statue in Craigneuk represents more than just sporting success. Before becoming a European champion, Gemmell grew up locally and worked at the Ravenscraig steelworks. Because of this, he was often referred to as a “Man of Steel,” reflecting both his strength on the pitch and the industrial heritage of the area.

Community Pride

The statue was created thanks to the efforts of the local community and supporters who wanted to honour one of Craigneuk’s most famous sons. Its unveiling brought together fans, residents, and football supporters to celebrate the legacy of a man who never forgot where he came from.

Today, the statue of Tommy Gemmell stands as a symbol of pride and inspiration. For the people of Craigneuk, it is more than just a monument it is a reminder that someone from their own streets went on to achieve greatness on the biggest stage in football.
