Honouring Those Who Serve
North Lanarkshire marked the start of Armed Forces Day 2026 celebrations with a ceremonial flag-raising at the council headquarters in Motherwell. The event recognised the dedication and service of the Armed Forces community, bringing together local representatives, veterans and military supporters to pay tribute to those who serve and have served.
Provost Kenneth Duffy was joined by local veterans, elected members, the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy and North Lanarkshire’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Bob Burgess, as the official Armed Forces Day flag was raised. The ceremony served as a visible demonstration of the area’s continued support for serving personnel, reservists, cadets, veterans and military families.
A Community Saying Thank You
Speaking at the ceremony, Provost Duffy highlighted the importance of recognising the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and their families. He thanked everyone currently serving, those who have served in the past, and the families who provide vital support behind the scenes.
Councillor Bob Burgess also reflected on the significance of the occasion, describing it as a privilege to stand alongside veterans and members of the community in recognising the commitment, courage and selflessness shown by the Armed Forces.
Supporting the Armed Forces Community
The flag-raising forms part of the nationwide programme of events leading up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June. Across the UK, communities will come together to celebrate the invaluable contribution made by serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families.
For North Lanarkshire, the annual ceremony is an opportunity to reaffirm its appreciation for the Armed Forces community and to recognise the lasting impact of their service. Raising the Armed Forces Day flag is a simple but meaningful gesture that reflects the area’s respect, gratitude and ongoing commitment to supporting those who dedicate themselves to protecting the nation.
